BioActivo Red Rice are tablets that contain 83.3mg of red rice yeast, whose activity has been tested and shown to be capable of maintaining normal cholesterol levels in the body. This mechanism of action is related to a substance called monacolin K, which influences the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase involved in the production of cholesterol by the body.
Red rice yeast is rice that has been fermented with the yeast Monascus purpureus, acquiring a purplish-red colour. Red rice yeast contains a variety of substances called monacolins, each identified by its own letter. However, only monacolin K is recognized for its ability to maintain normal cholesterol levels in the body.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) evaluated the evidence on the content of Monacolin K and recognized the following claim:
